Eastern Michigan University Connects Students With Vital Care Tools

The Student Center at Eastern Michigan University transformed into a hub of support and community on October 7 as the university hosted its Mental Health and Wellness Fair. From noon until 2 p.m., the building’s first floor and outdoor patio filled with students exploring various booths designed to bridge the gap between academic stress and accessible healthcare. Attendees enjoyed a relaxed atmosphere complete with live music, arts and crafts, and treats, while meeting representatives from both campus offices and local specialty providers.

Among the most popular attractions was Tinker, the university’s facility dog, alongside essential campus hubs like the Disability Resource Center and the Women Resource Center. Beyond emotional support, the fair addressed tangible needs through Swoop’s Pantry. Located in Pierce Hall, the pantry provides food assistance and a free thrift area to students and recent alumni, reminding attendees that physical security is often a cornerstone of mental stability.

Specialized external partners such as Heigra Health and Michigan Minds offered critical insights into managing complex conditions. Representatives highlighted the mission of thriving despite psychosis, explaining how their programs assist those diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder in staying healthy and remaining out of hospitals. By focusing on empowerment rather than limitation, these organizations encouraged students to pursue their goals regardless of their diagnosis.

On behalf of EMU’s Counseling and Psychological Services, clinical social worker Erin Shaffer reminded students that professional help is readily available without financial burden. She noted that enrolled students receive twelve free counseling sessions every academic year. In addition to individual therapy, CAPS promotes specialized peer environments like the Lavender Link Up for LGBTQ+ individuals and the Students of Color Support group, neither of which count against a student’s yearly session limit. For those in immediate distress, officials pointed toward comprehensive crisis resources listed on the CAPS website including national hotlines and text lines.
