Student Voices Drive New Funding Fight Against Hunger in Brooklyn

Borough President Antonio Reynoso has unveiled a new initiative aimed at bridging the nutritional gap in Brooklyn by offering nonprofits four thousand dollars in matching funds to launch health and education programs. This effort, known as the Healthy Eating Grant, focuses on empowering residents with the literacy and resources needed to make informed dietary choices. By funding everything from culinary classes to community workshops, the city hopes to move beyond temporary fixes for hunger and instead provide long term tools for food sovereignty.

What makes this program particularly notable is its origin, as it grew directly from the recommendations of the 2025 Youth Advisory Council. This group of twenty local high school students worked closely with leadership to identify systemic failures in how their neighbors access quality nutrition. Reynoso credited these young organizers for recognizing that fighting food insecurity requires a combination of physical access and practical education, praising their ability to translate grassroots concerns into official policy.

While the grant is open to various organizations across the borough, priority will be given to those operating in areas hit hardest by food instability. Neighborhoods such as Brownsville, East New York, Bed Stuy, and Sunset Park are primary targets for these resources. The goal is to ensure that zip codes and income levels do not dictate whether a family understands how nutrient dense foods can prevent or manage chronic health conditions.

According to Reynoso, true equity means ensuring every resident possesses the knowledge necessary to shop for their own wellbeing without barriers. He emphasized that providing meals is only one part of the equation; giving communities the autonomy to sustain themselves is where lasting change happens. Nonprofits interested in expanding their reach through these grants have until December 7, 2026, to submit their applications via the borough president’s official website.
